The panel is a fragment made up with an addition at the bottom (at present concealed by the frame). Attributed in 1813 to Leonardo da Vinci and later to Boltraffio, the attribution to Piero di Cosimo seems now to be generally accepted, although Bacci expresses reservations. A date in the first years of the sixteenth century seems probable.
