description
A sketch for the ceiling of the salone of the Villa Cordellina at Montecchio Maggiore, near Vicenza, painted for the lawyer Carlo Cordellina in 1743. It is likely that the embracing figures are Virtue on the left, holding a laurel wreath, and Nobility on the right, holding a statuette. They are accompanied by Fame, blowing a trumpet, and a vanquished female figure, probably Ignorance. The allegory relates to the clemency of the conquerors represented in the wall decorations of the salone: the 'Continence of Seipio' and the 'Family of Darins before Alexander'. Preparatory drawings are in the Pierpont Morgan Library, New York, and the Musei Civici di Trieste.
