Aubrey de Vere (1626-1703) served as an officer in the Dutch army until 1648. As a Royalist, he had his estates sequestrated under Cromwell and was twice imprisoned. He acted as envoy to recall Charles II, but later opposed James II and joined the Prince of Orange. The inscription is worn and the sitter's age was perhaps originally given correctly as 36. The attribution to Soest was proposed by Collins Baker.
