Nathan Field (1587-1619/20): one of the most celebrated actors of his generation; appeared as a member of the Queen's Revels and became the principal actor of Lady Elizabeth's Men; transferred to the King's Men, 1616, in which he was a leading player of young lovers; he was also a playwright. The sitter is identified in Cartwright's inventory. If this is correct, his age would suggest a date of c.1610. The hairstyle and dress, however, appear some fifteen years earlier and it seems possible that he is represented in costume.
