The portrait was acquired by Fairfax Murray at a West family sale and is therefore possibly a family portrait. The sitter may be the wife of West's younger son, Benjamin. She was described in 1804 as 'in a state likely to add to the family' and gave birth, probably in that year, to a son, also called Benjamin.
