The sitter was previously identified with Thomas Osborne, 4th Duke of Leeds, but a circular portrait of Osborne by Thomas Hudson exists that bears no resemblance to the man depicted here. His identity is therefore a mystery, and the authorship of the painting is also disputed: some art historians attributed it Thomas Hudson, although it is now believed to be closer to Knapton's style.
