description
William Romeyn was born in Haarlem, where he became a pupil of Nicolaes Berchem. He visited Rome in 1650-1, and his works are absolutely typical of the so-called 'Dutch Italianate' style. This little evening study places pack animals against a picturesque cityscape reminiscent of the Roman forum. The figures and animals show Romeyn's clear debt to Berchem.
