The figures on the left may be Saint John the Baptist, the Virgin and the Magdalen This seems to be the group which appears in a comparable composition by Vald?s Leal in the Hispanic Society of America, New York. Conceivably they are the Daughters of Jerusalem who followed Christ on his way to Calvary, lamenting (Luke XXIII, 27-8). The subject was often treated in Spain, usually with Christ alone.
