description
At the edge of a forest, Eve hands Adam the forbidden fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genesis, Chapter III, 6). Although Adam recoils, his eyes are firmly fixed on the temptation. In the distance to the left is their resultant expulsion from Eden (Genesis, III, 23-4). Flemish master Pieter Coecke van Aelst established a successful studio in Brussels in 1544, where many important Flemish artists were trained - including possibly his future son-in-law, Pieter Brueghel the Elder. His 1539 translation of Sebastiano Serlio's architectural treatise, 'I Sette Libri dell'Architettura', is credited with having played a crucial role in spreading Renaissance ideas to the Low Countries.
