The sitter, traditionally called Moliére, has more recently been identified as Michel Baron (1653-1729), an actor in Moliére's company. However, he does not greatly resemble the sitter in Jean de Troy's portrait of Baron at the Comédie Francaise, Paris. Formerly catalogued as School of Le Brun; the attribution to Lefebvre was proposed by Boyer.
