Probably painted c.1790 - the sitter appears a few years older than in the self-portrait dated 1785 in the National Portrait Gallery, and younger than in a self-portrait of 1793/4 recorded in a miniature copy by Bone (Bonhams, Knightsbridge, 19 March 1996, lot 87).
