description
John Somers (1651-1716) became Solicitor-General and was knighted, 1689. He became Lord Keeper in 1693 and Baron Somers in 1697. He was Lord Chancellor of England from 1697-1700. The sitter is identified in an inscription, verso, which reads: 'S.r John Sommers Knighti by M.r Riley...' He appears no older than twenty-five and cannot be represented after having received his knighthood at the age of 38. The portrait was perhaps painted on the occasion of his being called to the bar in 1676.
