Probably an early work painted immediately after Greenhill left Lely's studio. The pose seems to be based on Van Dyck's 'Self-portrait with a Sunflower' in the collection of the Duke of Westminster. The sitter holds a portrait drawing of himself by Lely, now in the British Museum (cat. exh. Sir Peter Lely, 1618-80, National Portrait Gallery, London, 1978-9, no.82).
